STRAFE key personnel have been the anchor for successful business development, management, system design, user experience design and deployment in both commercial and military aerospace markets since its inception. STRAFE was founded by Ryan Roche post retirement from the United States Marine Corps, initially as a venue to support military student training scenarios that incorporated best in breed technology within the simulation and immersive environments. Since this time STRAFE has evolved the corporate reach to include instructional services, Business Intelligence (BI) Services (data mining, query, reporting, and strategy evaluations), user experience roadmaps, international negotiation support, foreign contract management and COTs simulation product design and deployment.
Some say “it has been a long time coming…” Others say “this is just a small glimpse of potential sweeping changes to come in the market-space as legacy single-source providers are replaced by key alliances and partnerships to align with future needs.” Joint Fires Training has been on the forefront of the military simulation market for many years now. It is almost impossible to attend a conference or meeting in recent memory without hearing the terms “JTAC, TACP, JFO, Joint Fires, or Call for Fire Integration”.
In truth many companies have pursued these opportunities on their own, created joint ventures, been involved in mergers or acquisitions, and in some cases even disappeared; all in the name of pursuing and securing contracts in countries around the world for Joint Fires Training and Simulation. The underlying unease has been whether the support truly desired by those who need it most, the end-user, has been answered, especially on the international front.
“How is it that a community anchored in a philosophy of increased effectiveness through combining core unit level capabilities on the battlefield ever get true support from single providers struggling to balance multiple internal P&L goals of their own?” asks one participating company CEO. “It is time to change the way this market is supported… in order to truly support the Joint Community, industry needs to become a joint capability provider who increases effectiveness for the customer by overlapping core corporate capabilities while rapidly reducing the red tape, hurdles and cumbersome controls to deliver on market needs.”
In early 2015, under the innovative “Strategic Alliance for Excellence” charter on which STRAFE Services, Inc. (STRAFE) was formed, Immersive Display Solutions Inc. (IDSI) and STRAFE launched a dedicated development toward securing a major strategic effort in the Middle East using the philosophy described above. IDSI, MetaVR and Battlespace Simulations, Inc (BSI), companies with a long-term successful history of working together on JTAC training programs, joined with STRAFE to form the initial Alliance for this particular effort. As founding members of the Alliance, the companies overlapped their core capabilities to create a complete solution offering to the “Joint” community in a way that focused on the end-user’s success, not on each individual company’s profit performance.
In a short amount of time this effort has started a trend within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region of the Middle East for standardized Joint Fires Training Systems and Course Curriculum Support.
The Charter Alliance quickly evolved to include an additional member when the request came from the customer to increase the delivery to include a 5 meter JTAC immersive dome. As stated by one of the founding Alliance members with regards to the addition of another member to the effort: “The Collective Unit Training Solution, or ‘CUTS’ product family has been architected as a scalable and modular design to grow based on customer needs, with the architecture advancing as rapidly as the tactics, techniques and procedures evolve on the battlefield. When the customer asked the Alliance to include delivery of a world-class JTAC solution, QuantaDyn Corporation, integrator of the Air National Guard Advanced JTAC Training System (AAJTS) was the absolute best choice, since it maintains an inherent plug and play interoperability to the rest of the systems as a result of MetaVR's VRSG (Virtual Reality Scene Generator), MACE from BSI and ImmersiveDome visual displays from IDSI being common between all the systems.” The final technology partner added to complete the first deliverable for this effort was Meggitt Training Systems, an international leader of integrated live fire and virtual weapons training systems. The customer requirement of providing collective unit training including indirect and direct mortar fire control systems led IDSI and Strafe to select Meggitt as the best-in-breed partner to provide the needed products and services to integrate their virtual mortar weapon trainers into the deliverable CUTS system.
IDSI, as the lead company for this effort, signed a contract for multiple Joint Fires classroom simulation systems with the United Arab Emirates Presidential Guard Institute. The key components of the contract are the first commercially-sold QuantaDyn Advanced JTAC Training System (AJTS) to the international market as well as the integrated mortar fire control systems. The combination of CUTS systems will be used to train and maintain readiness for the UAE’s Joint Fires Observers (JFO’s) within the Presidential Guard, as well as the Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) students formerly operating under the Air Warfare Center (AWC) of the UAE Air Force.
IDSI, a well-known leader in Simulation & Training visual system design, manufacturing and integration, will lead the delivery as the manufacturer and exporter of the Collective Unit Training Solutions product line co-developed with STRAFE. IDSI will deliver CUTS to the UAE during early 2016 with STRAFE continuing to service the contract with direct in-country customer support for a period of several years. Under the contract IDSI will deliver multiple CUTS classroom environments including 1x16 and 1x4 configurations with multiple displays and emulated military equipment providing key training versatility, an AJTS 5-meter dome system (delivered as a module of the CUTS product family), a desktop dome system (based on IDSI’s VisionStation 2 product line), and a Mission Briefing/After Action Review and Commanders Training System. IDSI and STRAFE have partnered with International Golden Group (IGG) of Abu Dhabi, UAE to deliver the complete program to the customer, known as the UAE Presidential Guard Joint Fires Training System Phase I.
The contract includes options for planned future upgrades and additional CUTS systems. The systems streamlined effectiveness and end-user ease-of-use simplicity are anchored in the integrated products from MetaVR and BSI. As is defined by the Charter Alliance, combining these proven software products with the unmatched visual display systems from IDSI, world-class JTAC training system from QuantaDyn, and support services from STRAFE provide a scalable product family that immediately served the customer’s end state needs for today, tomorrow and many years to come.
